Zimbabwe will host its first Startup Weekend event from May 16 – 18th at new tech venue, Hypercube Hub in an initiative designed to encourage the development and support of new tech ideas..
The event is open to the participation of anyone with a new, innovative idea, particularly as it is related to tech in Zimbabwe. Specifically, the project aims to invite the participation of young people and women: youth unemployment in Zimbabwe makes up 70% of the official 80% unemployment rate in Zimbabwe.
No Limits weekend
The theme of Zimbabwe’s inaugural Startup Weekend is, “No Limits”. It is aimed at inspiring Zimbabweans to leverage the talent they have right here in Harare. The weekend is designed to help foster the sharing of ideas and to develop new technologies that can transcend the growing sense of socio-economic isolation Zimbabwe has experienced in the past decade, getting youth plugged into networks of developers and tech entrepreneurs in other parts of Africa and beyond.
There is a catch
Zimbabwe’s first Startup Weekend “will follow a standard Startup Weekend format” and cost you $80 dollars if you book early. Strangely though we know many start-ups don’t have $80 to spare, especially not unemployed youths this event aims to serve. The event will welcome participants who will purchase a ticket as entrance fee to be a part of the event. The tickets are on sale for $99 general, a $80 ‘early bird’ special and $50 for students.
Winners win big
At the end of the three days, the team with the best idea is selected. The winners will be eligible to win valuable vouchers to help you grow your business online from Google, .Co and Amazon Web Services, a three-month accelerator programme with Hypercube, smart phones, tablets as well as financial and business development opportunities.
