With only a few weeks to go until the Appsafrica.com Innovation Awards 2015 in Cape Town, kindly supported by Mobile Monday South Africa, Uber and AppsWorld we take a closer look at each category over the coming weeks.
The Best Disruptive Innovation was a hugely popular category which provided a very broad range of entries from around the world. The line up for this category decided on by our judges are from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and the UK.
1. MicroEnsure (UK)
Nobody wakes up thinking about buying insurance, however MicroEnsure helps mass-market families obtain affordable insurance that they can believe and trust; so they have a safety net should bad things happen. Mobile insurance has established itself as one of the fastest-growing business models in mobile financial services in emerging markets. Many of the fastest-growing models are now based on the “freemium” product MicroEnsure built for Tigo Ghana in 2010 and has since been launched in 13 other markets across Africa and Asia.
2. Esoko (Ghana)
Esoko is an information and communication service for agricultural markets in Africa. They provide advice directly to farmers (market prices, weather forecasts, and growing tips) to help them increase yields and profits. They also provide solutions to organizations to help them connect with farmers (marketing products, monitoring activities, and sourcing goods).
3. Talking Bookz (Nigeria)
Talking Bookz is Nigeria’s first audiobook online store and publisher, Talking Bookz provides users with unlimited downloads to 3000+ audiobooks including many international bestsellers. Through the advancement of Picup technology and API’s they are able to work alongside e-commerce websites to offer them a super quick and efficient solution to their deliveries.
