Africa’s Best Fintech Innovation 2015

The awards kindly supported by Mobile Monday South Africa, Uber and AppsWorld celebrate the enormous growth in mobile, technology and entrepreneurship in Africa. Fintech innovation is an extremely hot sector across Africa with finalists from South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and the UK.

 

LipaPlus (Kenya) 
LipaPlus is a mobile point of sale and business management solutions provider that seeks to promote more efficient and cost-effective cashless payment solutions with an aim of improving the operations and running of small and medium-sized enterprises in Kenya. LipaPlus have created a platform that provides a simple card payment system by incorporating compliant hardware and software based components,one that is integrated with other payments solutions e.g mobile money and cash to ensure that all your sales are updated and recorded in the app. They offer improved reporting by providing merchants with an increased visibility into their business, which aids in planning.

Mergims (Rwanda)
African migrants often complain about the misuse of remitted funds by their relatives. Mergims is a mobile application from Rwanda that connects migrants back to merchants in their countries of origin, so they can buy electricity, airtime and pay tuition fees and more for their relatives for a small service fee.

SimbaPay (UK) 
SimbaPay is a digital money transfer provider that enables Africans living abroad to seamlessly open bank accounts in Africa using its app. They make the process of sending & receiving money 100% electronic hence eliminating middle men and agents and as a result reduce the cost of sending money to Africa from 12% to 3%. SimbaPay were also the first company & app to enable Kenyans living abroad pay bills via M-Pesa Pay Bill without having an M-Pesa phone number.

VCpay (South Africa
VCpay gives those without bank accounts or credit cards, the power to pay for goods online, in app, overseas, wherever. The VCpay technology looks to disrupt the payment eco-system and challenge traditional banking with a solution that addresses the growing changes of our world. It provides an immediate, accessible payment service for those who have not been afforded the ability before.

Mastercard/ Standard Bank MasterPass app (South Africa) 
MasterCard, in partnership with Standard Bank, launched MasterPass, a digital wallet that gives consumers a seamless, secure and speedy check out – regardless of where they may be and what device they may be using. It allows consumers to use any payment card or enabled device to go beyond plastic and discover enhanced shopping experiences that are as simple as a click, tap or touch – online, in-store or anywhere. The digital wallet, accessible through the MasterPass acceptance network, allows consumers to store all their MasterCard or other branded credit or, debit information, and shipping and billing address details securely in one place.

Verifone Mobile Money (Kenya)
Verifone Mobile Money provides contactless mobile payments and financial services software enabling mobile wallet users to ‘tap and pay’ at any point of sale. We bridge the gap between the mobile wallet and the merchant enabling mobile wallet users with any mobile device, card or NFC wearable to be able to trigger their mobile wallet at the point of sale. Electronic purchases using their mobile wallet are typically as quick as 15 seconds vs M-PESA where consumers do a person to till number transfer which can take up to 3 minutes.
